Services will be held on Monday February 26 at the First Presbyterian Church in Lake Park, Iowa for Eunice Tena (Kruger) Nebelsick with interment in Union Cemetery at Harris, Iowa. Visitation will be on Sunday, February 25th from 5:00-7:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church. She passed away on February 21st at the age of 94.
Eunice was born on November 17, 1923 to Conrad and Lida (Onken) Kruger on a farm near Allendorf, Iowa. She grew up on the farm and attended a country school near Allendorf graduating from Sibley High School in 1941. After high school she held various jobs in Sibley working as a “hired girl” to a family expecting their first child, doing bookwork for D&H Storage, as a clerk in the Ben Franklin Dime Store and for several years as a clerk in the War Rationing Office.
It was at the War Rations office where she met George Nebelsick. They were married on May 4, 1945. Her married life was spent first on a farm near Allendorf and then on a farm two miles west of Harris, Iowa. They had eight children.
Eunice was baptized in the Trinity Reformed Church in Sibley, Iowa and she and George were member there until1970 when they became members of the First Presbyterian Church in Lake Park, Iowa. Eunice was very active in both churches holding offices in the Women’s Groups, teaching Sunday School and Bible School, serving as the Sunday School Superintendent and as a Deacon for many years. Any time something needed to be done in the church, Eunice was there. She was active in several clubs and organizations and held offices in all of them.
Eunice was a devoted mother and housewife spending endless hours taking care of her husband and eight children. There was a large garden and lots of canning and freezing of fruits and vegetables every year to keep the family fed. After most of the children had left the nest, she started sewing for people in the community, making single items, complete wardrobes, wedding and bridesmaids dresses. Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls became a small business for her; she made many pairs of all sizes which she sold or donated to various charities. She attended the countless plays, programs and sporting events of her children and grandchildren and always showed positive support. As a grandmother, Eunice was always willing to babysit one (or many) of her grandchildren. They all loved being out on the farm. She gave unselfishly of her time taking care of them and others. There were always homemade goodies on hand to treat visitors and her Chocolate Chip Cookies were the best!
George and Eunice moved to an apartment in Lake Park in 2002 when living on the farm became too difficult for both of them. They enjoyed their time in Lake Park. George passed away in 2006, having been married for 62 years. Due to health problems, Eunice moved to the Lake Park Care Center in the fall of 2010.
Eunice is survived by her eight children, Pat Forbes of Lake Park, Iowa; Clif Nebelsick of Coralville, Iowa; Joyce Schwartz of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Calvin Nebelsick of Lake Park, Iowa; Marilee Nebelsick-Tagg (John) of Encinitas, California; Paula McKenna (Ken) of Oxford, Iowa; Keith Nebelsick (Sue) of Spirit Lake, Iowa and Janet Hansen (Bill) of Shakopee, Minnesota. In addition, she is survived by 15 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; her brother Lawrence of Sibley, Iowa and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George; sisters, Helen Helmers and Nina Perry; sons-in-law, Douglas Forbes, Dick Kuehl and Larry Schwartz; daughter-in-law, Gillian Nebelsick; granddaughter-in-law, Tansy Forbes and three infant grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Lakes Regional Hospice, First Presbyterian Church or Pearl Valley Healthcare.
